This Tuesday would be our third Venture Café Night: No Ceilings but we’re pressing the pause button this month to regroup and rethink our approach. We’ll pick up where we left off, but it may look a little different. Here’s why:

When we we’re putting together No Ceilings the idea was to take our successful Thursday Gathering model and combine it with the goals and initiatives of The Promise Zone, Forward Through Ferguson and the office of the Chief Resilience Officer. We know we had a few challenges ahead of us:

Would the existing tech community that joins us each Thursday cross the Delmar Divide even if it’s literally just on the other side of Delmar Boulevard?

Would the event come across sincere or just another well intentioned attempt that misses the mark?

We held two Café Nights and the turnout wasn’t nearly the 500 people we see each week at Cortex. We never planned for our Café Nights to reach that number anyway, but we were hoping for more engagement. For context, our first event brought 90 people. We knew something wasn’t clicking so we decided to take a step back and evaluate. And that’s what we’re doing this month. We asking a few questions and we’d love to hear your feedback, too:

  • What does the community actually need?
  • We know that quality is better than quantity so how can we take those 90 people? Maybe something more focused?
  • What does actually being part of the community look like?
  • How can we bring more entrepreneurs from around the area to the North Side?
  • How can we bring in more entrepreneurs from the North Side into the Venture Café community?

We’re sorry we won’t see you this Tuesday 11th but we’re confident this is a much needed pause to see how we can better approach the needs of the community. We’ll keep you posted as things develop.
