Are you ready to meet a person who epitomizes the term “space geek”? Mike Mackowski has been fortunate enough to turn his passion for space exploration into a career in engineering, a hobby in scale modeling, and an avocation in promoting space to the public. Mike recently retired as an electrical engineer who spent most of his career designing spacecraft electrical power systems. He was most recently employed at Northrop Grumman Innovation Systems (formerly Orbital ATK) in Gilbert, Arizona. He has worked on such programs as the Landsat 8 and 9 satellites, the Fermi and Swift gamma ray observatories, the Iridium communications satellite constellation, TOMS-EP, TIMED, Landsat 5, GRO, TOPEX, the National Aerospace Plane, and the Space Shuttle.

The program will cover Mike’s career in aerospace (which started at McDonnell Douglas in St. Louis) and how he extended that to building models of historical spacecraft and being an advocate for space exploration. While working for McDonnell Douglas in St. Louis, Mike gave nearly monthly talks at schools and other organizations. In 1984 he founded Spaceweek-St. Louis and was a co-founder of the National Space Society chapter. Additionally Mike is a renowned scale model builder and publishes a series of reference booklets for hobbyists on the subject of historical spacecraft. This book series, called Space In Miniature, offers scale data and kit reviews that cannot be found elsewhere in a single reference work. Come meet this “space geek” and hear about his adventures as a spacecrafter.
